PICTURE PROJECT LESSON:

Concept:
Exploration involves seeking something new.
Exporation may lead to discovery which may lead to new knowledge.
FPO:
Develop global awareness, knowledge and understanding.
Develop leadership and cooperative skills.
Objectives:
Students will communicate with other students in mainland classrooms via telecommunication technologies.
Students will gather information about other communities using information technlogies.
Students will learn about various technologies.

Overview: The Picture Project is a lesson that will involve the students in exploring their own communities, identifying its uniqueness, taking pictures,summarizing information and putting the information together using Claris Works. The exchange occurs when the two classes ÒexchangeÓ their picture documents through Electronic Mail or US Postal Mail.

Target Group: Fifth Grade

Procedure:

1) Discuss:

2) Arrange students into groups of two to three.

3) Assign students with the task of brainstorming specific ideas that they want to share.

4) Take pictures with a digitizing camera or have students bring in photographs to be color scanned.

5) Digitize/scan images for use with Claris Works.

6) Have students write and type out a brief and clear, summarized text that goes with the picture.

7) Combine pictures and typed text onto a Claris Draw Document.

8) Exchange the documents using either Electronic Mail or the US Postal system.

Evaluation:

1) Product Evaluation: Students will publish a Claris Works picture document/text document and share with their collaborative class.

2) Students will identify aspects of their community and life that make them unique.

3) Students will compare and contrast information they gathered with the information mailed to them from Michigan.

Extension:

1) Send video thank you note to collaborative classroom.

2) Create a "Call for Participation" to be sent out over a listserv, and do a picture exchange with different regions/countries.
