Summer Workshop Expectations:

When does the Summer Workshop begin and end?

Do I have to attend the Workshop everyday?

It is expected that all Researchers attend everyday of the Workshop. If you are unable to meet this obligation, please notify your Team's contact person and the HERN Office.

Who can I ask if I have further questions?

You can contact HERN by sending e-mail to hern@hawaii.edu or by posting your question or comment to the list (hern-l@hawaii.edu).

How should I prepare for the Workshop?

What e-mail account do I use if I have more than one?

We suggest you choose one and use it religiously for the duration of the HERN Institute 96-97.

Please refer to the June 4, 1996 Letter by Director, Philip J. Bossert, Ph.D.

Where is the HERN Office during the Summer Workshop?

The HERN Office will be temporarily housed in Naio 209.

I went to registration and my name was not listed. What do I do?

The HERN Office will be temporarily housed in Naio 209.

Please check in and complete a blank registration form. You are expected to follow up with the HERN Office to ensure proper registration prior to signing up for any of the daily workshops and activities. Note: You may continue as a member of the School/Team Project during the year-long Institute; but, substitutions and additions may not attend the Summer Workshop.

I am a last minute substitute. What do I do?

Due to the number of requests, the HERN Workshop is limited to six (6) team members who initially submitted proposals that were accepted. You may continue as a member of the School/Team Project during the year-long Institute; but, substitutions and additions may not attend the Summer Workshop. Proposals were accepted for a number of reasons including the skills and backgrounds of its participants.

The HERN Office will be temporarily housed in Naio 209.

I am not receiving any messages from the listserv. What do I do?

Please send a message to herncrd@hawaii.edu. Please include your full name, confirm your e-mail address (default to the address sent from), school or institution, and note which of the following apply to you:

        HERN Participant 1995-6
        HERN Participant 1996-7
        Volunteer
        Instructor

I am unable to check my e-mail everyday. How else can I be informed?

The HERN project is providing a complex, year-long training program for 200+ persons/year. Although we realize that each individual participant has individual and unique circumstances, it is not possible for the small HERN staff to tailor its communications and services to the needs of 200 individuals.

In order to save time and money and to engage as many of the HERN participants as soon as possible in the process and habit of daily E-mail interaction, the HERN team decided to conduct all of its communications with participants (after the intitial mailings) via E-mail. We realize that this will be an inconvenience for some and that some persons will not be able to keep up with what is going on because they do not have access to E-mail from home or an office on a regular basis. If it is too great of an inconvenience, perhaps it might be best to re-evaluate your participation in the HERN project.

There are a variety of ways of finding out what is going on if you do not have access to E-mail, the most obvious being to find someone on your team who does have access and ask them to keep you informed via phone or fax. The HERN staff cannot provide these special services. It is also an option just to show up on the first day of the HERN Summer Workshop and know that you will be unprepared and need to devote extra time the first few days to catch up on what you have missed. Success in the HERN project requires almost daily E-mail access. We trust that those who make a point of it can find a way to make that access available.

If there are questions about this policy, please contact Dr. Bossert directly at: bossert@hawaii.edu

Additional Training: I missed all or one of the workshops on E-Mail, ListServs, and the World-Wide Web. Will there be any more?

Some workshops on the basics may be added during the first week of the Summer Workshop; however, it is expected that all attendants have the basic skills requested by the HERN.
