ResourceTeam Expectations & Outcomes

In addition to being a member of one of the project teams which have been selected to participate in the 1995 HERN Institute each participant in the HERN Summer Workshop will also be a member of a 6 to 12 person resource development team. On the first day of the Workshop, each participant is asked to join one of the twenty ResourceTeams. These teams are based on academic interest or subject matter areas, but participants may join teams outside of their own academic discipline or subject matter specialty area if they wish. The primary task of the ResourceTeam is to design, develop, implement and maintain (for at least one year) an on-line -- i.e., Gopher and/or Web site -- information resource for use by all members of the Hawaii education & research community. And, since it is on-line, it will also serve as a resource for anyone in the world who has Internet access to Hawaii's Gopher and Web servers.

A time has been set aside each day for ResourceTeam members to meet and discuss the form and content of their resource and to develop appropriate strategies for acquiring the skills and information needed to develop, implement and maintain it as an on-line information resource. You should plan on meeting with your resource team every day during the two weeks of the Workshop.

Each member of the ResourceTeam has an E-mail address. As soon as possible, your team should create an E-mail distribution list so that each of you can easily send mail and information to the members of your ResourceTeam. Secondly, your team should meet to decide the nature of the on-line resource you wish to create and maintain as a group for the next year. Although the HERN staff have suggested twenty broad categories of interest as a starting point, your ResourceTeam is not bound by this category and may design and implement any on-line resource which all members agree to assist in the development and maintenance of. Thirdly, the ResourceTeam should create either a Gopher site or a Web page (or possibly both, if it wishes) to use as the location which defines its on-line resource All three of these tasks should be completed by the end of the first week of the Workshop.

By the end of the second week of the Workshop, your ResourceTeam should have completed and posted to your Gopher or Web site an updated description of your on-line resource which includes:

Your ResourceTeam may also include any contributions to the content of the information resource which it feels may be appropriate at this point.

By the end of August (8/31/95), your team should have developed and posted to your Gopher or Web site at least some preliminary resources for use by those "hitting" on your site. During the 1995/96 school year, your ResourceTeam should continue to work together as a team to develop, manage and maintain this information resource so that it provides a valuable service to those seeking information from it. The HERN staff will be showcasing one or two of these sites, as well as the problems and possibilities encountered in the development of these on-line resources, during a monthly program aired on the education channel (CATV). The HERN Project quarterly reports to the National Science Foundation will also include information on these resources and what has been learned from their implementation.

By May 31, 1996, your ResourceTeam should have completed a final report on the design, development and implementation of its resource and submitted it to the HERN Project team. Those teams wishing to continue the maintenance of their resource sites may do so. Those resources not being actively developed and maintained will be terminated and removed from the HERN servers.
