ProjecTeam Expectations & Outcomes

Each participant in the HERN Institute has been selected because his or her individual or team project description shows promise as an approach to creating innovative learning environments which employ interactive multimedia or on-line resources. During the two weeks of the HERN Summer Workshop, a wide variety of resources will be provided to you to assist you and your team members in further clarifying and developing your project concept and strategy. There are many more options available than any one person can possibly take advantage of; so it will be important for you to work with your team members (if your project is team based) to make sure that some member of your team has participated in each of the sessions needed to fully develop and implement your project during the coming year. If you are developing your project as an individual, then you need to plan a strategy for attending those sessions which best meet the needs of your project design and development.

A time has been set aside each day for project team members to meet and discuss your project and develop appropriate strategies for acquiring the skills and information you need as a team to realize the goals of your project. You should plan on meeting or at least touching base every day during the two weeks of the workshop.

Each member of the project team has an E-mail address. As soon as possible, if you have not already done so prior to the Workshop, your team should create an E-mail distribution list so that each of you can easily send mail and information to the members of your team. Secondly, your team should create either a Gopher site or a Web page to use as a location for providing information about your project to members of your team, as well as to others who may be interested in your project. Both of these tasks should be completed by the end of the first week of the Workshop.

By the end of the second week of the Workshop, your team should have completed and posted to your Gopher or Web site an updated description of your project which includes:

You may also include any other information your team feels is appropriate at this point.

By the end of August (8/31/95), your team should have developed and posted to your Gopher or Web site an "implementation plan" for your project which details the manner in which your team plans to implement the project during the coming year. Any additional members of the project team -- students, faculty, staff -- who will be involved in the project should also be identified at this point, so that they can be included in the HERN resource lists and, if necessary, provided with E-mail accounts.

During the 1995/96 school year, your project team should submit quarterly updates on the progress of your project -- both its successes and failures -- so that others may learn from your experiences. HERN will be showcasing "best practices" as well as various project innovations, successes, pitfalls, problems and possibilities on a monthly program aired on the education channel (CATV). The HERN Project reports to the National Science Foundation will also include summaries of the projects and what has been learned from their implementation.

By May 31, 1996, your project team should have completed a final report on the implementation of its project and submitted it to the HERN Project team. Those projects which meet all of the above requirements may be invited to present their findings as part of the 1996 HERN Summer Workshop and, if funding allows, provided with continuing support during the 1996/97 year.
