We are no longer accepting applications for the Voyager Travel Grant

The Voyager Travel Grant is a travel support program to support the efforts of Hawaii Eduction & Research Network (HERN) participants to tell their HERN stories at national conferences. $25,000 will be appropriated for the 1997-98 Voyager Travel Grant.

Purposes:

Funding Information

  1. The travel program will support conferences held between September 1, 1997 and June 30, 1998. Requests for payment should be processed before June 30, 1998.

  2. Support funding will be available only for national and international conferences taking place outside of Hawaii. Funds ‹ up to $1,000 per person per conference ‹ may be used to underwrite any of the following conference-related expenses: airfare, ground transportation, lodging, conference fees, materials preparation & duplication, and A/V equipment rental for presentation (if required).

  3. HERN will fund up to $1,000 for one presentor per paper. Two or more persons may request funds to support different presentations at the same conference, but two persons will not be funded to present the same paper even if they are co-authors. Proposals should note any cost sharing provided by the home institution of the teacher or professor.

  4. No retroactive travel funding or submission of papers will be accepted, i.e., papers presented at conferences prior to Sept. 1, 1997 are not eligble.

  5. Grants which have been awarded will be paid upon receipt by the HERN project of: 1) proof of participation in the conference by the presenter (i.e., copy of program or agenda), and 2) proof of payment of conference related expenses (copies of receipts).

Procedure:

  1. Submit your paper for consideration as a presentation at a national or international conference taking place outside of Hawaii. The paper should reflect the HERN research agenda and describe your experiences with implementing telecommunications-enabled collaborative activities in the classroom and the resulting impact on student learning.

  2. If your paper is selected for presentation, submit the following to the HERN project:
    1. A copy of the letter of acceptance and/or conference program showing your paper;
    2. A proposed travel budget, including: airfare, ground transportation, lodging, conference fees, materials preparation & duplication, and A/V equipment rental for presentation (if required) - meals and other misc. expenses should not be included; and
    3. A copy of your paper and/or presentation.

  3. You will be informed within two weeks of receipt of the items in #2 whether or not your request for a HERN Voyager Travel Grant has been approved (funding is not automatic, since there may be more requests for funding than funds available and some effort will be made to distribute the funds equitably among K-12 and university applicants as well as avoiding funding too many participants at the same conferences).

  4. Upon return from the conference: 1) Submit a copy of your final (as presented or published) paper and/or presentation graphics (on disk); 2)Submit your proof of participation and payment to the HERN project office; and 3) Share your presentation and reflections on the conference with other HERN participants in some format (i.e., HERN Crossing, HERN listserv, a website, etc.). HERN reserves the right to publish the paper on at the HERN Web Site.

Criteria:

  1. Eligible HERN participants include project team members involved with the HERN '95 and HERN '96 Institutes, and HERN '97 Inquiry Team Members, TALENT '97 participants, or Dole and Maemae Summer School Staff & Faculty.

  2. Priority will be given to first time conference presenters; so please note in your request for funding if you have never presented before at a national or international conference.
