| Course Description: | Closed Captioned. Take a tour of planet Earth. Learn about the Earth's physical environment: Plate tectonics and other internal processes, earthquakes, mountain building, rocks and minerals, volcanoes, landscape development, and man's relationship with Earth's hazards and resources. Students view 30 programs on cable tv, complete textbook and outside readings, and complete a self-guided tour and project. There are 4 exams taken at home as open-book exams. | |

| Technical Requirements: | Cable allows student to take course from their home by tuning into their local educational cable access channel. Cable courses are either “live” or pre-recorded. To take a cable course, students must be cable subscribers to either Oceanic Cable or Craig TV. The University of Hawaii cable programming (or UHTV programming) is broadcast on the following cable access channels:
Oahu County: Olelo channel 55, Craig TV channel 21 (Hickam does NOT broadcast higher education programs) Maui County: MCCTV channel 55 Hawaii County: Na Leo O Hawaii channel 55 Kauai County: Hoike channel 55 Students should check whether they can view the education cable access channel from their home before registering. If students reside in a region of their county that is unable to receive the educational cable access channel listed above, the student should not register for this course via cable. It is recommended that students review the Tips for Cable Students website: http://www.hawaii.edu/dlit/sched/cable_tips.htm Part of the course is also taught online. The Internet allows students to participate in the course online at home using a personal computer. Depending on the course, students may be required to log in at a specific day and time or at anytime. Students should contact the instructor after registration or prior to the first day of class to get detailed information regarding the course. Familiarity with using a computer and basic Internet skills (browsing, sending e-mail, saving/sending files) is a requirement for online courses. Computer Requirement: A computer with at least 32 MB recommended and a CD-Rom. PC with Windows 95 (later version), 98, or NT, or a Power Macintosh running System 8.4 or higher. If your machine is not already connected to a network and has an IP address, you need a modem to dial into your campus modem pool or an Internet Service Provider to obtain an IP address and to be connected to the Internet. You should have at least a 28.8 – kbps modem. You will need a browser to allow you to view the WWW (e.g. Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher, or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher) It is also required that you obtain a UH Email account.
